Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane

by Susan Thom

When I look at the picture of Christ in the garden of Gethsemane, I can't help but wonder just what Christ was saying to His Father. "Why me?" was probably the first question! Was He as confused as I am about this World, and some of those who live on it? Did He wonder why people acted the way they did? Did He question where vindictiveness and cruelty started?

Was He hurt because His brothers and sisters refused to get the meaning of life? Was He as committed to helping this world, as He was to dying on the cross for our sins? Was He questioning His Father's wisdom in taking Him from a place He may have been able to recreate? Did He go back and forth between His dire situation, and that of the world he was leaving? Was confusion filtering through His mind as He desperately tried to understand His Father's motives?

Was He thinking about how much He would miss His disciples, and those that followed him, and His mother Mary? Did He grieve the loss of all those He had come in contact with while traveling through His journey on Earth? Did He trust His Father's judgment, or was He disappointed in His fate? Did He know what He would be doing next? Was His job spelled out for Him? Was the belief in His mission enough to calm Him in his hour of need?

It must have been so difficult for Him to know what was going to happen, and yet, also knowing it was meant to be. When He said good-bye to those He had become fond of, did His heart hurt? Did He cry? Did he want to be alone, or surrounded by those He loved? Was He worried how His mother and aunt and cousins and friends and followers were going to handle His hanging on the cross? How could they not?

Did He wonder what it was going to look like where He was going? Would He be surrounded by angels and saints and those who had proven themselves worthy of being in Heaven? Where would His Father dwell? Some believed He sat on a throne, would that be the case? And what would He ask of His son? I'm sure He was hoping that the pain He was about to endure would be gone when he reached His Father.

All of these questions are worthy of contemplation. I have asked many of these questions myself. What will death be like, is there really a specific place called Heaven? Or does it expand the whole galaxy? Do we float around like angels, or are there other areas for we new comers? I think Faith is the key to acceptance. To believe God is loving and caring, and Has prepared a place for us, should take away any of our fears.

However, being human, we carry fear in our minds, and the more Faith we can gather as we travel down the road of our destiny, the less fear we will have. After all, isn't Heaven the prize, and Earth the preparation for that prize? Let us do our best on Earth, and always know that eternity awaits us. that eternity won't contain the evils of this world. I don't believe there will be any lying, stealing, manipulating, greed, anger, or heartships. Yes, an eternity of bliss is worth waiting for.

Wow, Sue! This is fantastic! I have contempated many if not all of these questions. Your ending withdrew an Amen from me! I'm making preparation on Earth to spend eternity with God. Oh Sue, I don't want anyone to miss out but know many will. A very moving, inspirational and spiritually uplifting personal inquisition. Thank you!
