The Light Within Can Fight The Darkness Without

by Susan Thom

There will always be situations and people and predicaments that are going to cause us stress and frustration. No one should be led to believe life is going to be a fair playing field. Just because my mother told me not to pull others’ hair, didn’t mean other’s parents did the same. I was told it was wrong to cheat, and not to do so, but what about the boy sitting next to me?

There was no tolerance for lying in our home, but that didn’t always stop one of us four kids from doing so. Stealing was wrong, we all knew this, so why did we each have our " moments " of taking someone’s pen, or gloves? My parents weren’t about to let us swear, so why did we find ourselves in trouble for doing it?

What makes us who we are, and what makes us stand firm in our beliefs? What kindles a light within that fights the darkness without? I spent a lot of time alone as a child, mostly thinking and analyzing the world and it’s rather odd inhabitants. My feelings would get hurt, and I would try to figure out why someone had done or said what they did to purposely make me feel bad.

I always believed in God, at least I don’t remember a time I didn’t. Maybe when my mom first passed away, but we’ve made amends! That was twenty years ago, and the only time I actually felt anger at the Supreme being I had always counted on. It was a short lapse, and now, my foundation depends on my relationship with God.

It is ever present, and I can talk to Him or ask questions of Him, or pray to Him, wherever I am. It may be while I’m on my computer, lying in bed, driving to the store, sitting on the porch swing, or while trying to iron out a problem I may be having. He’s just there. His light of love, peace, and understanding is felt from within, and melts the darkness that lies on the outside.

That feeling is the motivation and the incentive to work things out and move on in a positive direction. No matter how sad or frustrated or angry, the enlightenment of that light is what helps me put one foot in front of the other, and simply move on. It isn’t always easy. Sometimes, it takes days, weeks, months, or years to work on something or some relationship, to make it all it can be, and that isn’t always easy.

It takes focus to accept things we cannot change, and courage to change the things we can. Moving out of our comfort zone is scary, but many times, it is to our best advantage to do so. The illumination of the vision within can catapult us into doing things we never thought possible. Ignoring negativity, and negative people can come from accepting that not everyone knows how to think and act appropriately.

Not letting these negative forces hurt us, but letting them encourage us to move on in a positive way is redeeming, and enables us to be stronger and wiser than in our earlier days. As long as we can stay in touch with the Light we feel inside, and depend on the knowledge of His love for us, we can inspire ourselves to be the best we can be.
