"Jesus Loves Me This I Know"

When I was a child, Monday through Friday reiterated what was learned about Jesus in Sunday School on Sundays. During those days, morning devotional at school was required and a formal dismissal signified the end of the school day before the bell would ring.

At church, we would learn all about Jesus Christ and sing songs to help our malleable minds comprehend what was being taught. “Jesus Loves Me This I Know” was one of the songs we would sing. We learned He loved us because the Bible told us so.

I can hear Mrs. Ivey, my now deceased third grade teacher, singing “Jesus Loves Me” in her high soprano voice. From first through sixth grades, our school day would not begin until we honored the One responsible for our existence.

Many decades have passed since those school days and learning how much Jesus loves me is far more than I can comprehend. Knowing His love for me is something I have come to understand first-hand instead of accepting it from a song: “. . . for the Bible tells me so.”

Falling to sin’s destruction, I was spared. "...little ones to Him belong." Because we were trained in the reverential fear of God including His great love for us, the road to destruction was aborted. Finding my way back to the road less travelled into my Savior’s arms is how I was spared.

Living in sin after falling for the wiles of the devil had me on a one-way journey to hell. " They are weak but He is strong." Thinking back over the years given to the enemy could leave one guilt-ridden if we did not know about God’s love. The Holy Scripture tells us Christ remembers our sins no more once we have repented. His redemptive bloodshed at Calvary was the price. Sin is so horrific that Jesus, while dying on the cross, asked His Father, why had He forsaken Him? God could not bear to gaze at His son when He bore our sins. But God loved us so much until He gave His son as a ransom for our eternal fellowship with Him.

There is nothing we can do to separate us from the love of God. "Jesus love me this I know!" People will most assuredly remind us of what we used to do and how we used to act. Since God remembers that no more, He is judging the ones who want to persecute us, not us.

As we press toward the mark of a higher calling in Christ Jesus, remember the love God has for us. "As He loved so long ago." Remember the blood His son shed for us will never lose its power. It has the power to keep us in the presence of God, basking in the peace, joy and provision it brings.

"Jesus loves me still today. Walking with me on my way." And just as we ended our school days those many years ago: “May the Lord, watch between me and thee, while we are absent, one from another, in Jesus’ name. Amen!”

Great article. I love reading straight forward inspirational message. It is a great distraction from all of the complex self-help messages we are bombarded with on a daily basis. I really enjoyed the end, May the Lord watch ... That brings back some great memories.

Faith Walker, thank you for the lovely comments. We have much in common based on your moniker and comments. Self-help isn't complex but simple. Our total dependence on God to trust and have faith in Him is the answer. May the Lord watch over you. *warm smile* Blessings!
